The Phoenix in you

I was in Chicago last weekend. It was my first time and I had already been provided enough opinions to form a few preconceived notions. A lot of my friends said that Chicago is what Toronto will be when it "grows up" since there are several similarities. However, to me, Chicago was far more beautiful than Toronto, with a very different vibe. I think maybe because it was given a second chance, albeit morbidly, with the great Chicago fire of 1871. The city was re-planned well and emerged stronger and more prosperous.

It made me think of all the times in my life I was given second chances and had to burn down the past, so to speak, to come out newer, younger and stronger. Funny thing is that just before something positive happens, things are often going horribly wrong. Maybe it is the universe's way of balancing the good with the bad.

The point of my writing this blog is to try and make people think less risk-averse. I think there are many dormant parts of our psyche that can only be brought to life if you want them to. So if you think about it, a lot of people only activate those parts that have conformed to ideas floated about by family, friends, and society in general.

As an example, I recently joined a belly dancing class. Someone asked me what the point of joining this class would be. My answer was that not everything that you do should have a point. You have to do things for the pure pleasure of exploring what you might like and what you might not. To try and experience something new just for the sake of it. To awaken a part of your life that you did not even know existed.

So do this: Within the realm of your various responsibilities, commitments etc. the next time a crazy thought crosses your mind, write it down (so that you do not forget) and try and act on it. Who knows where it might take you?
